Sliding Into Summer

Date: June 16, 2025

Location: Great Clips, Mashpee, MA

Cost: $24 (plus $5 tip)

Hairdresser: Courtney

Rating: ✄✄✄

Notes: I said I wouldn't go back to Pro Cuts, and I kept my word. I wasn't sure if I'd been to Great Clips before, but as soon as I sat down, Courtney said, "All scissors, short but not too short." I couldn't believe it. Apparently, they put haircut notes in the Great Clips computer system for each customer. It seems like a pretty obvious idea, but I'd never seen it before, and I was immediately impressed. The rest of the cut was smooth sailing. Courtney and I didn't talk much, which was fine. I think I was annoyed about something (check out my post-haircut pic above) and didn't want any chit-chat. Came close to having a post-haircut Pepsi, but I'm trying hard to cut down on my soda intake, so I opted for water instead. Not much else to say. I'd go back, but will probably try somewhere new next time. Guess we'll see.

Spring Cleaning

Date: April 28, 2025

Location: Pro Cuts, Falmouth MA

Cost: $22 (plus $5 tip)

Hairdresser: Maribel

Rating: ✄✄✄

Notes: Trust me, I didn't intend to go to Pro Cuts AGAIN, but when ByWay Barber on Main Street told me there would be a 25-minute wait, I had no other choice. The Pro Cuts experience is what it is - consistent, unglamorous, decent -- and today was no exception. Maribel (or whatever her name is) was nice, and the conversation was enjoyable enough. She used all scissors, played it conservative with a 1/2 inch off the top, and took the sideburns halfway up. I'm kinda thinking of other things to say because it was so non-descript. I will find someone new for my next cut. That I assure you.

A Little Off the Top

Date: March 15, 2025

Location: Pro Cuts, Falmouth MA

Cost: $22 (plus $5 tip)

Hairdresser: Donna

Rating: ✄✄✄ ✄✄

Notes: I know what you're thinking: "Andy, it doesn't even look like you got a haircut." And you'd be right. But don't blame Donna. See, I have a work conference and needed it to be cleaned up a bit, but didn't want it to be super-short. Donna did a great job. Sometimes, the hairdresser (hair stylist? barber? Still not sure what the best term is) will ignore my plea not to cut too much off the top and go to town. Donna was not one of those people.

I think my hair really peaks about two weeks after my haircut when it grows out a bit. I origimally planned to get my next haircut the first week of April, which would have me looking my best on my birthday (April 18). This haircut threw a wrench in that plan but we'll adapt. We always do. Until next time.

First Cut of 2025

Date: January 30, 2025

Location: Great Clips, Mashpee MA

Cost: $22 (plus $5 tip)

Hairdresser: Diane

Rating: ✄✄✄ ✄

Notes: I tried going yesterday but I didn't have an appointment so I checked in online and they texted me when I was close to being next in line. So basically, I got to wait at home instead of in their little waiting area. It was a nice touch. Early in the haircut, I asked Diane if the pizza place a few doors down was good (it's not), which led to a long conversation about local restaurants.I usually don't like talking to the person cutting my hair but she was easy to chat with and it wasn't too painful.

As for the cut, I think she did a good job. She didn't try and use clippers and was careful not to make it too short (see my last haircut). There was no post-cut hot towel or anything like that, but that was fine because it was my lunch break and I had to get back to work. Overall, it was a good experience and I'd go again.

Freshening Up for Thanksgiving

Date: November 7, 2024

Location: Procuts, East Falmouth MA

Cost: $22 (plus $5 tip)

Hairdresser: Kathy

Rating: ✄✄✄

Notes: Came after two other places said I required an appointment. Kathy, who usually works the cash register, was nice enough to step away to give me a quick cut. She was nice, although at one point I joked that Stone's Barber Shop, which was going out of business after years in the area, had been in the same location for 300 years. She said, "really?" Though in fairness, she may not have been listening to me.

Anyhow, I badly needed a cut. Kathy delivered. Was it perfect? No. Would I go back? Probably. Overall a pleasant experience.
